"Fostering Growth: Inclusive Training for Farmers and Their Families in Bukidnon"
Bukidnon - Last October 3 and 4, 2024, the Varacco team conducted the Smart FARM Project Orientation, baseline survey, and pre-assessment survey with the Portulin Talanding Tribe Association (PTTA) in Pangantucan, Bukidnon, and the Milalittra Farmers Agriculture Cooperative (MILFACO) in Talakag, Bukidnon. The activity aimed to gather initial data from the coffee farmer-beneficiaries, who are members of the Indigenous Peoples (IP) group in Bukidnon, and to introduce the project.
One significant observation made by the
Varacco team was the presence of many
farmer participants who were parents—mostly mothers—accompanied by their young children. These children, naturally playful and curious, sought entertainment and attention during the sessions. This often distracted their parents, who were trying to focus on the interviews and orientation. Many parents, especially

mothers, did their best to keep their children calm and engaged, often in quiet and kind ways.

Recognizing this challenge, the Varacco team decided to develop a strategy to make the Farmer Scientist Training Program (FSTP) more inclusive and child-friendly. The goal was to enable participants to focus on the training while ensuring their children were entertained and well cared for. This approach addressed the practical reality that many participants lacked alternative childcare options.
For the training sessions on December 4 and 5, the Varacco team brought not only training materials but also resources specifically for the children.
These included coloring books with stickers and crayons, which proved highly appealing to the kids. The team also guided the children on how to use the materials, fostering creativity and engagement. This activity allowed the children to explore their natural artistic talents while socializing with other kids and adults, an important developmental opportunity. Additionally, the team provided snacks and juice for the children, ensuring they were well-fed and happy throughout the activity.
The smiles and enjoyment of the children, coupled with their parents' ability to focus on the training, marked the success of the initiative. The participants successfully completed their training, gaining knowledge about IoT sensors, nursery management, biofertilizers, pest control, and sustainable farming practices. Simultaneously, the children’s activities maintained a harmonious and productive environment.
With just a simple gesture of providing coloring materials, the Varacco team brought joy to the local children of Bukidnon. Their parents shared this happiness, as they could concentrate on learning
without worry. This effort epitomizes
the Varacco tagline: “We make
happy happen.”
